John 5:24–29:
The Voice of the Son and the Life He Gives

Accurate Interpretation of John 5:24–29

After affirming that the Son gives life and has authority to judge (John 5:21–23), Jesus now develops how that life is manifested and how it relates to judgment.

(v. 24)
«“Most assuredly I say to you that the one listening to my word and believing on Him who sent me has eternal life; he will not go into judging but has moved out of the death into the Life.»

Jesus once again introduces a solemn declaration.

Two closely related actions are presented: “listening to my word” and “believing on Him who sent me.” Receiving Jesus’ word is also believing the Father who sent Him, because the Son speaks and acts in perfect unity with Him.

The result is expressed in three statements:

• “has eternal life”
• “will not go into judging”
• “has moved out of the death into the Life”

It is important to note that the text speaks in the present tense: “has” and “has moved.” Eternal life is presented not only as a future hope, but as a present reality already possessed by the one who listens to the Son and believes the Father.

“Has moved out of the death into the Life” describes a true change of condition before God. The person was under death and judgment, but upon receiving the Son’s word has entered into life and no longer remains under the condemnation that was due.

(v. 25)
«“Most assuredly I say to you that a time is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of the God, and those who listen will live.»

Jesus again introduces His teaching with emphasis.

He speaks of “a time” that “now is.” This indicates that what He describes does not belong only to the future, but was already beginning to take place through His ministry.

In this verse, “the dead” does not primarily refer to people physically lying in graves. Jesus is speaking of those who are spiritually dead, separated from the life of God by their sins and disobedience. This condition corresponds to “the death” mentioned in the previous verse.

However, the Son’s voice has power to give them life. That is why Jesus declares: “those who listen will live.” This is not merely hearing His words with the ears, but receiving them and responding to them by believing.

When Jesus spoke these words, He was present and people could hear His voice directly. Today we should not necessarily expect Jesus to speak to us through an audible voice. We hear the Son’s voice through His words and testimony preserved for us in the Scriptures. When Christ’s word is proclaimed and truly received, the Son’s life-giving voice continues to be heard.

(v. 26)
«Because just as the Father has life in Himself, just so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;»

The Father “has life in Himself.” His life comes from no external source and depends on no one else, because life resides eternally in Him.

In the same way, the Father gave the Son also to have life in Himself. Jesus is not merely someone who announces life; He possesses in Himself the life that He gives to those who listen to His voice.

This explains why the Son can give life to the dead. His ability to give life comes from His unique relationship with the Father and from the authority the Father has given Him.

(v. 27)
«furthermore He gave Him authority to pass judgment, because He is Son of Man.»

In addition to giving the Son to have life in Himself, the Father gave Him authority to pass judgment.

The expression “Son of Man” recalls Daniel’s vision, in which One like a son of man approaches the Ancient of Days and receives dominion, glory, and a kingdom over all peoples (Daniel 7:13–14).

By calling Himself the “Son of Man,” Jesus identifies Himself with the One to whom God gives universal dominion. That is why He has authority not only to give life, but also to execute final judgment.

(v. 28)
«Do not marvel at this, because a time is coming in which all those in the graves will hear His voice»

Jesus now expands the scope of what He has just declared.

He says, “Do not marvel at this,” because He is about to announce something even greater. In verse 25 He spoke of a time that had already arrived, when the spiritually dead hear His voice and receive life. Here, however, He speaks of a future time.

The expression “all those in the graves” shows that He is now referring to those who have died physically. A time will come when all of them, without exception, will hear the Son’s voice.

Just as His voice gives spiritual life in the present, it will also have power to call all the physically dead from their graves on the final day.

(v. 29)
«and will come out—those who did good things into the resurrection of life, but those who practiced evil things into the resurrection of condemnation.»

All will come out of the graves, but not all will have the same destiny.

Jesus presents two groups:

“those who did good things” → “the resurrection of life”
“those who practiced evil things” → “the resurrection of condemnation”

“Doing good things” does not mean obtaining eternal life through personal merit. In the immediate context, life is received by listening to the Son’s word and believing the Father who sent Him. Good works outwardly manifest that received life and a genuine response to Jesus.

In the same way, the text does not simply say, “those who once did something evil,” because all human beings have sinned. Jesus speaks of “those who practiced evil things”: people whose lives remained characterized by evil and who died without receiving the Son’s voice that could give them life.

Therefore, works do not appear as the cause by which someone obtains life, but as visible evidence of that person’s true condition. Some manifest that they have received the Son’s life; the others remain in the condition of death and condemnation.

This verse connects the Son’s authority to judge with the future manifestation of that judgment. No one will be left out of the resurrection, but every person will appear under Jesus’ authority.

Implications

• Eternal life begins in the present: the one who listens to the Son’s word and believes the Father has already moved out of death into life.
• Humanity is spiritually dead without Christ: people need to hear the Son’s life-giving voice in order to live.
• Jesus’ voice continues to be heard through the Scriptures: we do not need to wait for an audible voice, because His words have been preserved for us.
• Jesus is the Son of Man announced by Daniel: He has received dominion and authority from the Father to execute judgment.
• There will be a universal resurrection: both those who received life and those who remained in evil will come out of the graves.
• Works reveal each person’s condition: they do not purchase eternal life, but show whether someone received the Son’s life or remained under condemnation.

Applications

• Truly listen to Christ’s word: knowing His words is not enough; you must receive them and believe the Father who sent Him.
• Seek Jesus’ voice in the Scriptures: approach the Bible recognizing that through it we know the Son’s words.
• Examine what your way of life reveals: works show whether you remain in evil or whether the life received from Christ is bearing fruit.
• Recognize Jesus’ universal authority: He gives life, will raise the dead, and will execute final judgment.
• Do not postpone your response to the Son: life is found in listening to His voice, while continuing to reject it leads to condemnation.

Summary

In John 5:24–29, Jesus declares that the one listening to His word and believing on Him who sent Him has eternal life and has moved out of death into life. He affirms that the time has already come when the dead hear the Son’s voice and live, because He has life in Himself. He has also received authority to pass judgment. Jesus then announces a future time when all will hear His voice and come out of the graves, some into the resurrection of life and others into the resurrection of condemnation. The passage shows that life and judgment are under the Son’s authority.

Prayer

Our Father, we thank You because through Your Son You have made known the life that comes from You.

Lord, help us listen to Christ’s voice and respond to His word. Allow us to live conscious of the life You give and to recognize the authority You have placed in Your Son.

Guard us from ignoring what He has said, and lead us to live according to Your truth, knowing that You have established judgment and life in Him.
